Holiday Tech 2017 -- Smart Home

Doug Dixon is back with his annual round-up of fun tech products for the holidays. This year we'll focus especially on tech for the home -- including using wireless speakers to jingle bells around the house, digital assistants to remotely deck the hall lights, and wireless cameras to record video of any late-night visitors that come down the chimney with a bound.

However, you better watch out -- these devices can see you when you're sleeping, and know when you're awake. So you do need to think about whether they are bad or good, watching you in the living room, or listening in the bedroom, or conversing in the kid's room.

Holiday Tech 2016 -- Riding the Mobile Digital Revolution

It's holiday gadget season again, and Doug Dixon is back to demonstrate more fun examples of the latest cool products that are extending mobile digital devices into our lives -- from enhancing our senses with drones and VR goggles, to connecting us to our surroundings in our smart home, to tracking and enhancing our own health and fitness.

We'll also take a look back with artifacts of the digital revolution to see how mobile technology has evolved over the past fifteen years, and look ahead to new applications including digital assistants like Apple Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa.

So come and check out all the gadgets hands-on, and see how far we've come as we ride the mobile digital revolution.

Holiday Tech 2015 - Holiday Giving Expanded with Internet Crowdfunding

Doug Dixon is back to discuss and demonstrate the latest fun (and useful) mobile tech products for the holiday season. This year we'll also explore how Internet "crowdfunding" can expand your holiday giving, by using sites like KickStarter to help aspiring entrepreneurs create exciting new products, and sites like GoFundMe to provide support for people in need.

Doug also will demonstrate fun new products and designs that have resulted from crowdfunding projects, from inventive books and films to clever tech gadgets. Come and see how crowdfunding can make your holiday giving both more personal and more satisfying.

2014 Presentations

Holiday Gadgets 2014 - Wearables and Body Tech

Computers are evolving -- yesterday's desktop boxes have been replaced by our ubiquitous mobile handhelds. And next we are going to be wearing Google Glasses and iWatches, as our house automatically unlocks and turns on the lights and opens up a beer when we come home.

For this year's edition of Doug Dixon's Holiday Gadgets revue, we'll explore the developing possibilities of embedded devices -- including personal wearable accessories from fitness bands to watches to eyewear. Plus, we'll look at other fun accessories for our mobile lifestyles, including sharing audio in the home and on the go, wireless storage, and portable power.

2013 Presentations

Holiday Gadgets 2013 - Wireless Accessories / Digital Health

We're going mobile, with our smartphones and tablets and laptops. Over half of all adults in the United States now own a smartphone or a tablet, and some 65% of U.S. mobile phone owners are using smartphones.

Doug Dixon has been covering Holiday Gadgets in the Princeton area since 2002, and is back to discuss the new devices, and to demonstrate fun and useful portable accessories -- especially to extend your mobile devices with wireless connections.

Trends to explore this year include wireless audio to portable headsets and speakers, wireless connections to cameras and TV, wireless access to your data, and wireless tracking so you don't leave your phone or keys behind. Plus more on the latest in portable power to keep you charged, cases to protect these indispensible devices, and other fun goodies.

2012 Presentations

Holiday Gadgets 2012 - Cloud Services

Doug Dixon is back with his annual round-up of the latest crop of tempting portable gadgets, and to explore the expanding possibilities for our mobile and connected lifestyle. We'll discuss and demo portable handheld devices, including smartphones and tablets, as well as dedicated devices like e-readers. And we'll look at portable accessories to share and enjoy your devices on the go, including video and audio, storage and power.

But the big focus this year is on the Cloud -- the possibilities of storing all your information and media in the cloud. The idea is to make your life easier, so you won't have to plug into a computer in order to copy files to your device, or manage your stuff across multiple devices. But we'll also discuss the trade-offs of the cloud approach, and the big differences between the available services.

2011 Presentations

Holiday Gadgets 2011 - Smartphones, Tablets, and E-Readers

What's all this about smartphones and tablets and e-book readers? Was Steve Jobs right to envision the smartphone as the do-everything device, and the tablet as a replacement for a laptop? Or do you still need a separate phone, camera, media player, and other devices?

Doug Dixon is back for his annual round-up of this year's crop of tempting new gadgets, to explore the latest possibilities for our mobile and connected lifestyle. We'll discuss and demo the latest possibilities for our mobile and connected lifestyle, and ponder the deep questions -- iPhone or Android, iPad or Kindle, paper or plastic -- and look at new options for wireless entertainment, storage, and sharing.

And while the industry continues to push 3DTV, the action is in mobile connected devices -- smartphones and tablets, as smartphones power up to "superphones" at desktop performance and broadband speed, and tablets proliferate to meet any conceivable niche.
So come explore the developments from CES at Doug Dixon's annual round-up and demos of next generation in mobile gadgets and more. (See 2011 CES Summary)

The next revolution is not only coming, it's already here -- in the next dimension of 3D. Yep, there's 3D TV for live sports in your living room, 3D movies on Blu-ray disc, and 3D games on your PC. And you don't even have to wait a few years for the technology to trickle down -- already there are consumer solutions for creating your own 3D material, with photos from 3D cameras, videos from 3D camcorders, editing with 3D software, and sharing in 3D on YouTube. So put on your 3D glasses, and come step out of the plain into the next dimension in entertainment and sharing.

Smartphone developers are leveraging both the intelligence of the handset and the power of back-end cloud computing to provide new kinds of timely services. Location-based services now go beyond displaying maps and finding a near-by Starbucks to reporting the lowest local prices for gas, and providing the pulse of the neighborhood from real-time Twitter feeds. And new "augmented reality" services can use a smartphone's camera to provide information on what's around you – to look up a product bar code, or an interesting landmark or painting, or to identify the buildings that you see in front of you.

Smartphones are the new platform, and apps are the core. Apple reports that the App Store for iPhone has surpassed 140,000 applications, and users have downloaded over 3 billion apps -- not bad for a new market that was created only a year and a half earlier.

This talk will explore the range of apps being developed for these new platforms. In particular, beyond rude sound effects and popping bubbles, developers are leveraging both the intelligence of the handset and the power of back-end cloud computing to provide new kinds of services.

Flash memory continues its march through the consumer electronics industry, as it re-doubles in capacity and drops in price. Behind it leaves the wreckage of other, once proud, technologies and products -- the floppy disk wiped from PCs by the USB drive, the CD Audio disc humbled by portable flash players, and tape-based video cameras that now seem clunky compared to smaller flash cams. And next in the sights: computer hard drives giving way to faster and more rugged Solid-State Drives.
